Example: Count the number of square in the following figure:

A. 18

B. 14

C. 10

D. 9

Answer : B

Explanation :  We shall label the figure as shown below :

The simplest squares are AEML, EFNM, FBGN, NGHO, MNOP, LMPK, KPJD, POIJ and OHCI i.e. 9 in number. The squares composed of four components each are AFOK, EBHP , LNID and MGCJ i.e. 4 in number . There is only one square i.e. ABCD composed of nine components . Thus , there are 9+4+1 = 14 squares in the figure .

Example : Count number of squares in the given figure.

Answer : C

Explanation : Figure may be labelled as shown :

The square composed of two components each are ABKJ, BCLK, CDEL, LEFG, KLGH and JKHI i.e. 6 in number . There is only one square i.e. CEGK composed of four components . The square composed of 8 components each are ACGI and BDFH i.e. 2 in number . There are 6+1+2 = 9 squares in the figure.
